Methods of Basement Underpinning in GTA

This is the most traditional method of underpinning. It involves excavating sections beneath the existing foundation and sequentially pouring concrete in stages. Beam and base

During beam and base basement underpinning, we construct a reinforced concrete beam below the existing foundation. The load of the building is transferred to it, which also rests on a new base constructed on either side of the existing foundation. This method is suitable for complex projects where traditional underpinning can’t be performed.

Helical piles

Helical piles, also known as screw piles, are steel shafts with helical flights that are screwed into the ground. They provide foundational support by transferring the building's load to the ground through the piles. This method is quick, causes minimal disturbance, and is ideal for sites with limited access.

Difference Between Underpinning in GTA and Benching

Shortly, we use both underpinning and benching to increase basement space. However, basement underpinning is a more long-lasting solution focused on strengthening the building’s foundation. In contrast, benching is a method for creating space without altering the foundational structure.

Basement underpinning

Strengthens and stabilizes foundation;

Benching

Creates a ledge or ‘bench’ along the interior of the basement walls;
You get more space inside the basement without altering the foundation;
Doesn’t strengthen the foundation.

Initial Consultation and Assessment:

Design and Permit Acquisition:

We make sure that our underpinning process adheres to local building codes and regulations, setting a solid foundation for a safe and legal project.

Site Preparation:

We protect existing flooring, rearrange interior elements and set up access points for materials and debris removal.

Underpinning Sequencing:

We carry out selective excavation beneath the existing foundation in predetermined sections, progressively expanding the basement’s depth.

Excavation:

The name of the stage speaks for itself. We excavate your basement to the desired depth.

Concrete Application:

After excavation, we pour high-quality concrete to form the new foundation segments.

Concrete Curing:

We closely monitor concrete curing to make sure it hardens to the required level.

Finishing Touches

We refine any irregularities, apply waterproofing as needed, and clean the site. The result is a structurally sound basement ready for further use or renovation.
